A
HALLOWEEN STORY - Learning
to be a kid again
This weekend I got to be a kid again and I did it with enthusiasm
and great joy. What started out to be a little dressing up
for a Halloween event at a campground - turned into a magical moment
that I will cherish and remember for a long time to come. This
weekend gave me back innocence that I lost a long time ago and gave
me the gift of being a care free kid for a weekend. It was so very
overwhelming and even as I write this, tears stream down my cheeks.
Tears of happiness; tears of growth; tears from my lost youth
that have been bottled away only to be ascertain this weekend. I
received the gift to acknowledge my lost youth, let it go and grow.
The little girl in me got to have some fun with the kids as
a kid. This weekend was not about what I lost, it is about
what I got back!
Friday evening after work, 3 of my girl friends and I had our annual
girl's weekend, which took place at Moonlight Bay Campsite. Enroute
to the campsite I was notified that we would be stopping by the
dollar store as we were going to dress up as witches and partake
in the Halloween weekend event. We entered into the dollar
store with excitement; picking out our witch items, matching everything
together while colour separating each costume. I chose to
be the blue witch. Sixty-seven dollars and an hour later we
headed up to the campsite like 4 little giddy girls discussing our
costumes. The first thing we did was try them on, and then
of course we took them off, worked on adding materials to our brooms
and modified our outfits.
We had to be at the Rec Hall for judging of the costumes by 4pm,
each of us sauntered in a few minutes after each other. We
ended up in the 15 years plus category and we were the oldest kids
around! We didn't win a prize for best costumes but we had
the loudest cheers! After the judging took place we headed
out like the rest of the kids and trick-or-treated! We had
4 matching witch sacs for our candy, which I will proudly tell you
I filled mine twice! As I approached the first place to collect
my treats I hesitated with slight embarrassment and foolishness;
but was greeted with candy, eagerness & encouragement for our decision
to take part in the Halloween festivities. In fact the next
place wanted to take our picture. As I was posing for our
photo tears formed in my eyes, I was filled with delight. I
felt like a kid again. Light hearted with no cares in the
world, well accept I had concerns on who got more candy! Trick-or-treating
was suppose to end at 5pm, however, us girls wanted to make sure
we hit up everyone in the camp, we finished at 6pm!
Candy in hand we headed back to our campsite to eat dinner and get
ready for the 8pm dance. Of course, we had evening elements
to add to our costumes – finger lights to add some flare!
We were the first ones on the dance floor and it only took
minutes before the rest of the kids would join us! We dance
all night… Well in kids terms all night! Because let me tell
you between the trick-or-treating, dancing and all of the excitement
I skipped out on the last 15 minutes of the dance and was sleeping
just before 11pm Saturday night! I certainly didn’t
need to be reminded of my bedtime!
It was the most kid fun I have had in years.
It was freeing. I really do feel I was given a little bit
of my youth back. A gift, it truly was.
My lesson from this ~ It’s
never too late to bring out the kid!
